What does it mean to be called, sanctified, and preserved in Jesus?
Now that we know who Jude is, let's explore to whom he wrote this letter: to those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ. Jude wrote this letter to the church, to those who were already believers.
Called means invited to obtain eternal salvation in the kingdom through Christ. We know from John 3:16, as well as so many other scriptures, that all are called. No one is excluded. “The important thing is to answer the call when it comes, just as we answer the telephone when it is ringing,” (David Guzik).
Sanctified means to be made holy, to be separated from profane things, set apart from the world for a specific purpose, purified, cleansed, and dedicated to God, free from the guilt of our sin, to be made partakers of a divine nature. Every believer who has chosen Christ as their Savior is now and forever sanctified, and we should live as such. “So when we commit our life completely unto God, sanctified, what it means is that your life has been set apart for God’s use and you’re really not to use it for your own purposes,” (Chuck Smith). If we view ourselves as holy, maybe we will be more likely to live a holy life.
Preserved means to be taken care of, guarded, kept, held stable, observed, reserved for a purpose. All believers are preserved in Jesus Christ. He is our guardian and protector, not only on this earth but also for all eternity. We truly have nothing to fear.
